Your suspicion countermines
its own repose
discovering designs
to mask a pose
in evidence of innocence:
one naked look askew
will do, a single candid glance
to spark your fuse—
detonation guaranteed
to sabotage
meeting mindfully, agreed;
and surveillance of a cage
takes the keeper prisoner
unbeknownst and makes
a mate an inmate,
your captive an escapist.

—Jim Powell

Jim Powell is the author of two collections of poetry, Substrate and It Was Fever That Made the World, and the translator of The Poetry of Sappho. He is the 2014 recipient of the Oscar Williams and Gene Derwood Award.
